Exercise:
A balloonist travels towards a resting sound source. Decide if this situation acoustically corresponds to a moving source or a moving observer. Is the frequency heard by the balloonist greater or smaller than the emitted frequency?

Solution:
The balloon is at rest with respect to the surrounding air whereas the sound source is moving with respect to it. It follows that this situation corresponds to the case of a moving sound source. The relevant reference frame is the medium in which the sound waves move. vspacemm Since the source moves towards the observer the frequency heard by the balloonist is greater than the emitted frequency.
